Ready for the Big One? As prepared as we might be, the answer is of course no, that natural disasters, in whatever form they take, rip us from our stability and can destroy much in their wake. Dr. Lucy Jones takes us deep into the heart of natural disasters and their impact.
Dr. Jones is the internationally renown seismologist, who spent over three decades at the U.S. Geological Survey and Seismological Laboratory based at Cal Tech, and explains that while natural disasters are inevitable, cataclysmic human toll is not. In her new book, The Big Ones: How Natural Disasters Have Shaped Us and What We Can Do About Them, Dr. Jones examines some other natural disasters, including hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and of course California and international earthquakes. She looks at the random– and the predictable– in natural disasters, and cautions that The Big One in southern California is inevitable.
But Dr. Jones shows that it is much more than personal preparedness that will help us dig through The Big One–that it’s a collective choice that we must make for and about our cities, our structures, and our understandings of the risks at hand.
