What is the future of abortion access in America if Roe vs. Wade is overturned? We are honored to present two leading experts in reproductive justice and the legal right to privacy, UCI Irvine Law Professor Michele Goodwin and President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Alexis McGill Johnson, to discuss this issue at a pivotal legal moment.
In 1973, in the landmark case Roe vs. Wade, the United States Supreme Court established the legal right for women to have an abortion. Since then, there have been cases that have limited that right, including Planned Parenthood v. Casey, but the Court has always upheld the central framework of the decision: that women have a constitutional right to an abortion prior to viability, and throughout pregnancy if necessary to protect their health. With newly appointed Justices, the US Supreme Court this term has allowed Texas’s controversial “bounty” statute to stand and heard arguments in a case that can effectively overturn Roe and make abortion an issue for individual states to decide. We await the Supreme Court decision on this issue.
Our speakers will provide an update on the relevant legal, advocacy, and health care landscapes; who will be most impacted by the Court’s upcoming decision; and how those who want to engage on this issue can do so.
