For years, Frank Bruni has written to us about perspective– how to find it when we can’t, and how to grow one when we need it most. He covers pretty much everything in his great columns in the New York Times: dysfunction in American government, the occasional (or frequent) absurdity of those in positions of authority, the agony of choosing a college, or pop culture, he has an uncanny ability to make us see– and consider –that which lies just below the surface. He makes us laugh out loud while we feel outrage, bewilderment, or profound appreciation.

In his new book, The Beauty of Dusk (New York Times review), Bruni explores aging and physical loss: not long ago, he lost vision in one eye, and learned that he might face total blindness in the future. In his characteristic fashion, he discovers that trauma not only leads to despair, but to an even greater vision. He is, simply, one of our great social critics.

In conversation with Carol Leifer. Carol Leifer is a comedian, writer, producer, and author. She has been responsible for innumerable great and iconic episodes of The Larry Sanders Show, Seinfeld, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. She has been nominated for countless Emmys and other awards, and was just recently nominated for her work on this season’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.
