The Wallis and Writers Bloc present: Reza Aslan–an evening celebrating Iranian Culture, and his new book, An American Martyr in Persia: The Epic Life and Tragic Death of Howard Baskerville.

This is not your typical literary event. It will be a celebration of Persian culture, including comedy and music. AND since it’s Writers Bloc at the Wallis, it will feature literary discussion too.  Moderated by Maz Jobrani, with guests including Leila Forouhar and others to be announced.

Reza Aslan, scholar, historian, and international best selling author (God: A Human History; Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth), knows how to turn history into tales of adventure, mystery, murder, bravery, and of course, tragedy. In his continuing exploration of humanity’s relationship with religion, Aslan dusts off an American Christian missionary, Howard Baskerville, who had become an unlikely rogue hero for several generations of Persians. Missionary turned freedom fighter Baskerville emodies a heroic story — a short story, having been killed when he was 24, in 1909. Baskerville unwittingly ends up at the center of international intrigue, and exhibits stunning bravery in the fight for freedom against tyranny. And it was as basic then as it was later in the century: fundamentalism vs. monarchy.  Aslan uncovers Baskerville’s shocking feats  in Iran as heroic deeds– now erased in collective memory. But in America, his legacy is much more complex.
