National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colson Whitehead brings 1960’s Harlem to life in his new and absolutely joyful, affectionate, and often utterly hilarious book, Harlem Shuffle. It’s a crime novel featuring a challenging family, some slightly disapproving in-laws, and a hero who needs to stay afloat, maintain his reputation, and make sure he doesn’t get himself killed in the process.

Harlem Shuffle is Colson Whitehead’s valentine to the community of Harlem in the early 60’s, including the grifters, corrupt cops, and others– in a most effective exploration of race and justice. Harlem Shuffle is such a delightful and exuberant diversion from Colson Whitehead’s profoundly powerful and often wrenching books such as The Nickel Boys and The Underground Railroad. It is, simply, a blast.

In conversation with Boris Kachka. Boris Kachka is the books editor for the Los Angeles Times, and was books editor at New York Magazine. He is the author of Hothouse: The Art of Survival and the Survival of Art at America’s Most Celebrated Publishing House.
