What is it about Tom Hanks that makes him one of the most beloved actors of our time? He’s not just adored here in the U.S., but he’s as recognized and appreciated anywhere around the world as he is here.
Considered to be one of the most brilliant and talented actors, Hanks knows his way around comedies, and has led some of the best rom-coms in recent decades. He’s a fan of contemporary history, and his work in WWII dramas is formidable. Hanks has landed heaps of awards and nominations in film and television for his decades of exemplary acting, writing, and directing. But there’s so much more to Tom Hanks than movies, television, supporting social justice and space exploration initiatives. He’s an author. And no surprise, he’s a terrific writer.
Tom Hanks’ new novel, The Making of Another Motion Picture Masterpiece, draws on his personal Hollywood experiences– and his passion for looking at American culture from post WWII to the present. It’s a funny, moving, satirical take on the infrastructure of a colossal superhero movie, spanning decades and generations– sprung from a comic book with a lovely backstory of its own. Peppered with eccentric characters, action to spare, and a lens on post-war America and pop culture, The Making of Another Motion Picture Masterpiece is, to no one’s surprise, cinematic and incredibly fun. When’s the movie coming out?
In conversation with John Horn. You hear him all the time on KPCC/LAist, as he covers all things related to entertainment, arts and culture. He hosts the LAist podcast Retake. He’s the former host of the acclaimed shows and podcasts, The Frame, and Hollywood: The Sequel, and is a favorite of ours, and of Tom Hanks.
