Money Money Money!! Perhaps it’s a complicated subject for you. But Planet Money comes to the rescue and unravels it for us, with great humor, entertaining stories, and clear explanation. Planet Money is the most entertaining show on, well, the planet, for those of us who need help figuring out the mysteries of money management, and how it impacts us each and every day.
Did you ever agonize about how to maximize your investments? Or what some of those financial terms even mean? Or the best strategies of how to save? Or even how to spend? Fear not, because you’re not alone. For those of us who struggle with the complexities of personal spending in terms of daily life, we turn to the one source that can make sense of it all: Planet Money.
Join the team behind the popular podcast Planet Money and celebrate the publication of their new book, Planet Money: A Guide to the Economic Forces That Shape Your Life. Author and longtime contributor Alex Mayyasi and co-hosts Sarah Gonzalez and Nick Fountain will bring Planet Money’s signature brand of storytelling to the stage and discuss some highlights from the new book, including unlikely origin stories, revealing truths about human behavior, and insightful suggestions for navigating chaotic times drawn from the latest ideas in economics.
Sarah Gonzalez is a host and reporter for NPR’s Planet Money. Since joining the team in 2018, she has continued a career defined by deep-dive investigative reporting on inequality and justice. Previously a reporter at WNYC, her work on the Caught podcast earned a duPont-Columbia Award. Her investigations into the juvenile justice system and the Department of Homeland Security’s detention of undocumented teens have earned prestigious honors, including the Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize and an Edward R. Murrow Award. A former NPR Kroc Fellow, Sarah grew up on the San Diego-Tijuana border.
Nick Fountain is a reporter and co-host of NPR’s Planet Money, where he explores the economic forces that shape our world. Since joining the show in 2015, he has produced memorable stories ranging from uncovering global postal conspiracies to interviewing the inventor of the self-checkout. Previously, Nick served as a producer and director for Morning Edition. He began his career in community radio at KUSP and held roles at KQED and WBUR. He currently lives in Ventura, California, with his wife, daughter and dog.
And because Planet Money understands that some of us need more help navigating concepts like saving and spending, they provide graphics and charts, with their signature humor. UC Irvine legal scholar Mehrsa Baradaran, author of How the Other Half Banks, will be the special guest this evening. Come prepared to engage with the silly and the sublime and ask some questions of your favorite Planet Money hosts and reporters.
And because the Planet Money team understands keen financial incentives, and they know that the Writers Bloc audience is nothing if not brilliant and fashionable, they are offering a stylish tote bag which will accompany each book when you purchase it with your ticket.
