The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Friends, and Will & Grace are surely among the most beloved TV shows of the past several decades. One man, James Burrows, had a hand in all of them, and many others.
In conjunction with the release of his memoir, Directed by James Burrows, this legendary television sitcom director spends an evening reflecting on his five decades of making America laugh.
Filled with never-revealed stories of the casting of the dozens of great sitcoms he directed (and, in the case of Cheers, co-created) as well as details on how these classic shows were developed and grown, this insightful and nostalgic memoir offers a bounty of behind-the-scenes moments from our favorite shows, peeling away the layers behind how a successful sitcom comes together—and stays that way.
This conversation with James Burrows will be moderated by Jason Bateman, one of the most in-demand talents in Hollywood for his skill both in front of and behind the camera. Most notably, Bateman is an award-winning director, executive producer and star of the acclaimed Netflix drama Ozark and in 2019, earned an Emmy® Award for ‘Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.’
Additionally, he has been nominated for multiple Emmy®, SAG®, and Golden Globe® awards for his leading television roles in Ozark and the cult comedy series Arrested Development. Bateman is also the co-creator of Smartless, an immensely popular podcast series with special guests that include the likes of Vice President Kamala Harris, George Clooney, LeBron James, Tom Hanks, and Billie Eilish.
