According to U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman (CA), white Christian nationalism is a movement that has transformed the religious right wing of the Republican party, and has become a powerful and extremist force in Washington.
Huffman’s book, No Prophets: The Fight to Save Democracy from Christian Nationalism, illuminates the grip that the Christian right holds in national politics, using the insurrectionists of January 6, many of whom were avowed Christian nationalists as just one glaring example. Citing case after case of elected congressional representatives in Washington who espouse Christian national beliefs, Huffman argues that the movement’s goal is nothing short of the assault on the separation of church and state. Huffman is not without controversy in his very progressive leanings, and in his atheism. He is a co-founder of the Congressional Free Thought Caucus with Jamie Raskin, whose goal is to promote public policy based on reason, science, and moral values.
Speaking of promoting science, no one does it better than Bill Nye, the “Science Guy.” He’s a comedian, an educator, and a cultural phenomenon, who has entranced adults and kids for years with his approachable way of demystifying science, at the same time inspiring us, and increasing our awe about the way the world works. He is an absolute wonder.
