Shirley Jackson, an American literary legend in the  thriller genre, helped to shape some of our leading writers in the field. Her influence was profound, and can be felt in works by Stephen King, Jonathan Lethem, and many others. In her brief literary life, she published novels and over 200 short stories, written mostly in the late 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.  The Haunting of Hill House became a classic in the genre, was made into a movie, The Haunting, and recently became a Netflix series.

Shirley Jackson’s mixture of wit and menace, and heightened drama create the best kind of cocktail. Join us for a dramatic (and fun) reading of some Shirley Jackson stories.  Jackson’s stories are not simply spine-tinglers; some are prescient tales about how individuals make choices about how or if they conform to society at large.

Benjamin Dreyer, editor and author of the beloved and bestselling book, Dreyer’s English, will kick things off with a brief discussion on why Shirley Jackson matters. Benjamin was the copy  chief at Random House, and edited scores of favorite authors, including a volume of previously unreleased material by Shirley Jackson.

Annabeth Gish has appeared in so many great television series and films.  You’ve seen her in The X-Files; The Brotherhood; The West Wing; Halt and Catch Fire; The Bridge; and The Haunting of Hill House

The fabulous Kerry O’Malley is a singer and actor, who has appeared in NightbitchThe Six Triple EightThe Killer; and so many more.  She continues her role on the hit Netflix series, A Man on the Inside. She is a great friend of Writers Bloc, and was a featured actor at our Century of Fiction in The New Yorker event.
