Madeleine Albright has been to hell and back on any number of occasions– it was, after all, her job as our nation’s first female Secretary of State under President Bill Clinton. Before Clinton named her Secretary of State, she served as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Her extraordinary public service also included a desk at the National Security Council under President Carter.

In her new book, Hell and Other Destinations, former Madame Secretary reflects on her refusal to stand still– and her insistence on making each stage of her life “more exciting than the last.”  We learn about her tradecraft, her skills and humor through unorthodox methodology, and we see that there’s more to statesmanship than tough negotiations: we could study Madame Secretary’s jewelry for her mood, for her message.

Appreciated for her memorable no-nonsense quips, one that particularly defines her is her quick retort to an interviewer upon her departure as Secretary of State, how she’d like to be remembered. “I don’t want to be remembered.  I’m still here and have much more I intend to do.”  After stepping down from public life in 2001, she clearly never stepped out of the public eye– she is an active voice of engagement with presidents, prime ministers, and candidates for public office.  She reflects on the past, on the future, and the imperative to engage in a most meaningful and productive way. For Ms. Albright, retirement was never an option.
