April 28, 7:30 pm: Free Screening: Exporting Raymond- SOLD OUT

Everybody Loves Raymond was a phenomenally successful sitcom, and now, in syndication, it is still enormously popular. The growing Russian television industry smelled potential as well, and invited Phil Rosenthal, the show’s wry creator, to come to Russia to discuss adaptation for a Russian audience. Sitcoms cross borders all the time.  Some adaptations succeed abroad, others not so well.  Phil Rosenthal narrates this really funny documentary about taking an essentially American family sitcom to another culture, to a country so hungry for pop culture that it seems to be exploding everywhere. Rosenthal walks in with an open mind, and in this delightful film, he shows the hilarious, frustrating, daunting and utterly perplexing nature of reworking this American product into a Russian television show.  Can it work? From Samuel Goldwyn Films: Phil Rosenthal created one of the most successful sitcoms of all-time, “Everybody Loves Raymond.”  He was a bona-fide expert in his craft.  And then…. the Russians called.

In the hilarious EXPORTING RAYMOND, a genuine fish-out-of-water comedy that could only exist in real life, Rosenthal travels to Russia to help adapt his beloved sitcom for Russian television.  The Russians don’t share his tastes.  They don’t share his sense of humor.   But what Rosenthal did discover was a real comedy, filled with unique characters and situations that have to be seen to be believed.  An audience award winner at multiple film festivals across the country, EXPORTING RAYMOND proves that even if you’ve never seen “Everybody Loves Raymond”, you’ll still enjoy this wildly entertaining film.

We at Writers Bloc agree. A conversation with Phil Rosenthal follows the film.   At the Landmark Theaters at the Westside Pavilion, 10850 Pico Blvd., Los Angeles.

This event is now full. The film opens on April 29.
