Do you ever wonder if you're too picky about your dates and your relationships? We invite you to a candid discussion about the benefits of being married, being single, or being divorced. Writers Bloc presents Lori Gottlieb and Sandra Tsing Loh. Lori Gottlieb's article last year in The Atlantic Monthly, titled "Marry Him! The Case For Settling For Mr. Good Enough" sparked discussion and controversy, because Lori's premise is that Prince Charming, Mr. Perfect and Mr. Right might not be worth waiting for, once we reach a certain age. Can we have fulfillment with someone who is just . . . good enough but perhaps not what we yearned for when we were younger? Lori's new book, "Marry Him! The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough," Lori talks to matchmakers, divorce lawyers, therapists, behavioral scientists, to explore if being so picky is really in our best interests past forty. Sandra Tsing Loh is a Writers Bloc favorite—we love her books, from "Mother on Fire" to "A Year in Van Nuys," and everything else. We love her "Loh Down on Science" on KPCC, as well as "The Loh Life." This past summer, Sandra's piece in The Atlantic Monthly, called "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off," triggered countless articles and blogs about her conclusion that marriage is, well, overrated.
Also participating will be Rabbi David Wolpe, of Sinai Temple here in Los Angeles. Rabbi Wolpe appears in Lori's book, "Marry Him," in the "expert" department. Newsweek named him #1 pulpit rabbi in America, and he is locally and nationally respected for his blend of humor, wisdom and brilliance.

Tickets are $20.

Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the ICM Screening Room, 10250 Constellation Blvd., Century City, at 7:30 p.m.

Should the whole field of mental health treatment for children be radically rethought? Bestselling author and New York Times columnist Judith Warner has written provocative pieces in the New York Times that make us stop and think, or argue, or nod noisily in agreement. She writes on matters of our daily lives, pertaining to children, public health issues, motherhood, depression, Hillary Clinton, Ellizabeth Edwards, you name it. Her new book, We've Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication, explores the social costs and benefits of medicating—or refusing to medicate—children with ADHD, depression, autism and other mental health conditions. Warner takes on the issue from a variety of perspectives, pinning children, parents, doctors and schools under her lens for a thorough discussion about the personal—and broader—ramifications when parents don't, or can't, provide medication and therapy for children with mental health issues. Caitlin Flanagan writes award winning columns in The Atlantic Monthly and in The New Yorker. Utterly uninterested in political correctness, Flanagan is a social critic who writes about domestic issues that affect women most—and as any household understands, what affects women most, affects men even more. Flanagan's pieces are deeply provocative, and incredibly fun.

Tickets are $20.
